Todd Whitney

Welcome to my patch of digital grass. If you're looking for a shortcut to my air quality work, click up. Otherwise, scroll the gallery to check out my ongoing building and previous projects.

I build small systems that help you question and navigate larger systems. Sometimes this work pushes me to build technologies and devices. Othertimes, I'm building narratives. My pursuits are always guided by the belief that the tools & information for living a good life should be accessible and shared.

I'm currently a Just Tech Fellow at the Social Science Research Council. My fellowship work expands the role of human-in-the-loop climate monitoring systems. Sometimes, that's building technologies that assist newsrooms in reporting. Other times, it's dissecting technologies masquerading as health products. I also give talks and workshops on air quality.

Previously, I was a researcher at The Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Columbia University. I'm a sometimes-adjunct at NYU's Interactive Telecommuications Program and NYU's Journalism Institute, where I teach classes on embedded sensors, weather systems, and longform narrative. I've reported/produced/engineered at NPR, KALW, Audible.
